For all students and employees from the Faculty of Science, training for equipment can be arranged after having discussed the suitable equipment for the project. In order to use the equipment from the shared facilities, precautionary safety trainings have to be succesfully finished.
If a research group from Physics wants to start a new project with our facilities, we ask the (daily) supervisor to inform us several weeks in advance. Once the student reaches out to the research technicians, the necessary trainings will be scheduled.
If a research group within the Faculty of Science wants to start a project, please contact Marcel Hesselberth.
Once the student is about to start their research project, they contact the appropriate research technician(s) to schedule trainings. As a student, you can follow these steps:
Check if you have followed the necessary safety trainings and fire extinguisher course provided by the AMD.
What sample do you need to fabricate? Pay attention to substrate-material, deposited materials, film/stack thicknesses, interface cleanliness, planar resolution, etc. Pay attention to the details of your sample!
How do you fabricate this in the easiest way possible? Read papers on previous research for similar devices. (Tip: look for the PhD theses, typically this is the first or second author of the paper.) If, after consulting the available literature, you are still not sure, contact the research technicians.
Contact the people who are responsible for the equipment you need. Tell them who you are (name, research group, daily supervisor, etc.), what you want to make (be specific!) and how you think that is most easily done. Plan a training. Be aware that the training can typically not be planned in the same week!
You get access to the relevant equipment after succesfully finishing the training. Use the reservation system to book the relevant equipment. If you have made a reservation, but you are not using the system after 30 minutes, other people are allowed to used the equipment.
During your fabrication process, you will probably encounter obstacles. Feel free to contact the research technicians for help regarding the fabrication process. You can either send them an email or walk by their offices.
Note that before one can use the equipment located in the cleanroom, one needs to have followed the cleanroom safety training. More information about the equipment can be found on the NanoWiki.
Any users from outside the faculty can get in contact for specific arrangements. For the use of the equipment, we count the same rates similar to NanoLabNL.
